Paul H. Dembinski studied political science in Geneva and received his doctorate in economics in 1982. In 1979 he was appointed lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Geneva, and in 1991 he was appointed visiting professor at Switzerland’s University of Fribourg, where he now occupies the chair of International Strategy and Competition. He also teaches at ASERI – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
An expert on behalf of international organizations such as OECD and UNCTAD, since 1999 he has been co-editor of the journal Finance and the Common Good/Bien Commun.

Abstract:
ENGLISH
Il presente contributo intende verificare se, e in tal caso in che modo, le varie componenti del paradigma tecnocratico identificate da Papa Francesco nella Laudato si’, siano state individuate dai suoi predecessori sul soglio pontificio, a partire da Leone XIII fino a Benedetto XVI. Questa analisi mostra che il modo in cui Francesco affronta la questione è più completo, per non dire sistemico, rispetto ai suoi predecessori.

This paper seeks to see whether, and if so how, the various components of the technocratic paradigm identified by Pope Francis in Laudato si’, have been spotted by his predecessors on the chair of St. Peter; starting with Leo XIII up to Benedict XVI. This analysis shows that the way Francis addresses the issue is more comprehensive, not to say systemic, when compared with his predecessors.

ENGLISH
Questo contributo esplora gli scritti di tre pensatori cristiani (Georges Bernanos, Romano Guardini, Jacques Ellul) che da tempo avevano messo in guardia sui pericoli per la civiltà di una "tecnologia totalizzante". Gli autori propongono un approccio olistico di quello che Papa Francesco nella Laudato si' descrive come paradigma tecnocratico. Alcuni di questi scritti potrebbero aver ispirato alcuni passaggi dell'enciclica.

This paper explores the writings of three Christian thinkers (Georges Bernanos, Romano Guardini, Jacques Ellul) who have long warned about the civilisational dangers of “all-technology”. The authors propose holistic approach of what Pope Francis describes in Laudato si’ as technocratic paradigm. Some of these writings may well have inspired this or that passage of the encyclical.
