Elena Maestri teaches History and Institutions of the Muslim World at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. She has carried out extensive research on the history, politics and societies of the Gulf Arab States, on gender issues and Islam, development, cooperation and the media in the Arab-Muslim world. She is author and co-author of many publications. Migration and Integration Challenges of Muslim Immigrants in Europe, that she co-edited and published in the “Politics of Citizenship and Migration Series” of Palgrave Macmillan, is her most recent volume.

Abstract:

Questo articolo affronta il tema dell’immigrazione nei paesi arabi del Consiglio di Cooperazione del Golfo (GCC), la terza più importante destinazione dei flussi migratori a livello mondiale, dopo Nord America ed Europa. Il cosiddetto “sponsorship system” (kafāla) è preso in esame, così come si è andato sviluppando in questi paesi a maggioranza musulmana, che continuano ad attirare numeri elevati anche di immigrati cristiani. L’evoluzione di un dibattito interno sui diritti degli immigrati non-musulmani emerge, alla luce del ruolo della Chiesa Cattolica nel Golfo, soprattutto nel settore della formazione. Il dualismo delle società arabe del Golfo e la necessità di riformare il sistema della kafāla sono altre questioni rilevanti oggetto di discussione in questo lavoro.

ITALIANO
This article deals with the topic of migration to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Arab countries, the third most attractive destination of labour migration in the world, after North America and Europe. The “sponsorship system” (kafāla) is analyzed, as it developed in these Muslim majority countries, which continue to attract high numbers of Christian immigrants as well. The evolving debate on immigrants’ rights and religion emerges, in the light of the role of the Catholic Church in the Gulf, in particular in the education field. Gulf Arab societies’ dualism and the need to reform the kafāla are other relevant issues discussed in this work.
